What is a cord of firewood?

A Cord is a unit of measurement used for firewood. A full cord is 128 cf. When a full cord of 16" firewood logs are stacked tightly it is 4' x 8' x 4'.
The exact number of logs and exact dimensions depends on split (width) and cut (length.) Our firewood is cut to 16" length and split to a manageable size ( about 3-4".)
Fractions of a Cord
1/4 cord: 4' × 6' × 16" = 32 cubic feet
1/3 cord: 4' × 8' × 16" = 42.67 cubic feet
CF = Length × Width × Height
And every inch counts.
If your firewood rack measures 8' L × 4.3' H × 16", it can hold approximately 45.87 cubic feet. In that case, when we deliver and stack a 1/3 cord (42.67 cubic feet), it may not completely fill the rack—even though you received the full amount you ordered.
✅ How We Measure Firewood (And Why You’re Getting Exactly What You Ordered)
We understand there can be confusion about firewood quantities, so we want to be fully transparent about how we measure and deliver our firewood.
Ohio law requires firewood sold by measure to be measured and sold by the cord or a fraction of a cord, rather than by terms such as “truckload,” “rick,” or “rack.” That’s why all of our firewood is measured by true cord volume.
After splitting, our firewood is neatly stacked into crates that hold exactly 1/3 cord (42.67 cubic feet). These crates are our measurement standard.
The firewood remains in these crates:
During the seasoning or kiln-drying process
While stored in inventory
Loaded directly into our box trucks for delivery to your home
Because the wood is stored this way, there is no guessing or estimating.
Why It May Look Like More or Less
Firewood can look like a different quantity depending on how it is dumped or stacked. For example:
Dumped instead of tightly stacked: Loose wood can take up more space and make the volume harder to judge by appearance.
Different rack dimensions: A rack that is longer, taller, or deeper than our standard 1/3 cord measurement of 42.67 cubic feet may look more or less full depending on its dimensions.
Different stacking: The way individual pieces are positioned and stacked can change the appearance of the pile without changing the actual volume.
The appearance of the wood can vary, but the volume does not. We take accuracy seriously and stand behind our measurements.
